Heavy Industry & Process

Gicam technology can use DED laser cladding to repair large, expensive components used in the steel, cement, paper, and material handling industries, such as cylinders, bands, rollers, and rollers. It targets only the worn area, without replacing the entire component, to minimize production downtime.

Press and drying rollers

A dynamic balance that must be maintained, and surface roughness that determines the quality of the paper: the precision of the coating is just as important as its placement.
These very large-diameter cylinders, often made of cast iron, are subject to wear, corrosion, and pitting on their outer surfaces due to continuous contact with the paper web and steam, while the body of the cylinder remains structurally sound. DED allows for the precise resurfacing of this area, restoring the geometry and surface roughness critical to the quality of the paper produced, without replacing a solid cylinder that is extremely costly to remanufacture.

This repair prevents prolonged paper machine downtime, a major economic challenge given the very high hourly production cost of these continuous lines. Precise control of the deposit also helps preserve the roller’s dynamic balance, which is essential for high rotational speeds.
Restored surface roughness → Critical for the quality of the paper produced.
Dynamic balance maintained → Essential for the high rotational speed of these rollers.

FAQ

Why is surface roughness so important for these rollers?

Because it directly affects the quality of the paper produced in contact with the sheet—the DED restores this roughness along with the cylinder's geometry.

Does reloading affect the roller's balance at high speeds?
