Power Transmission

Gicam technology can use DED laser resurfacing to restore precision rotating components in power transmission systems, such as gear shafts and housings, cylinder rods, and pump impellers and shafts. It targets only the worn areas—bearing surfaces, splines, and bores—while maintaining concentricity and balance tolerances.

Seal Sizes

A very localized defect commonly found in gearbox farms: reinforcing the bearing seat rather than replacing the shaft, sometimes using a material that is stronger than the original.
These areas of the shaft that come into contact with the lip seals wear down due to continuous friction, creating a groove that compromises the seal and causes oil leaks—a common issue in gearbox maintenance. DED allows for the precise resurfacing of this contact area to restore a surface finish and diameter conducive to a proper seal, avoiding the need to completely remachine the entire shaft for a very localized defect.

This low-cost repair is particularly cost-effective given the frequency of this type of damage in gear reducer fleets operating continuously, where oil leaks have a direct impact on reliability and preventive maintenance. DED also allows for the selection of a filler material that is more wear-resistant than the original, extending the service life of the bearing surface beyond what would be achieved with an identical replacement.
Waterproofing restored → Diameter and surface condition of the bearing surface locally repaired.
Improved service life → Filler material that is more wear-resistant than the original.

FAQ

Why does a seal race wear out faster than the rest of the shaft?

Because the lip seal rubs continuously against the same spot, it wears a groove into the shaft, causing oil leaks even though the rest of the shaft is intact.

Can we choose a material that is stronger than the original one?
