Gicam technology can use DED laser cladding to repair fleet components exposed to abrasive wear and impact, such as railroad wheels and axles, turnouts, bucket teeth, plow blades, and tracks. It targets only the worn area, without replacing the entire component, to minimize downtime for machinery and rolling stock.

Pivots and Bogie Joints

A forged or cast part, specific to each type of rolling stock: re-coating the contact surface restores the original operational clearance.
These connecting components between the bogie frame and the car body—or between the bogie components themselves—undergo wear due to continuous friction under heavy cyclic loads, with wear concentrated on the contact surface while the rest of the part remains dimensionally stable. DED allows these worn contact surfaces to be rebuilt with a wear-resistant alloy, restoring the original operational clearance without replacing a costly forged or cast part that is specific to each type of rolling stock.

This repair method is particularly relevant for fleets of older rolling stock, where standard replacement parts are not always readily available. Precise control of the deposit ensures compliance with the fit tolerances necessary for proper dynamic performance of the bogie.
Restored functional clearance → Worn bushings re-ground, without replacing the forged or cast part.
Useful for older equipment → Useful when standard replacement parts are no longer readily available.

FAQ

Why repair a bogie pivot instead of replacing it?

Because these parts are specific to each type of rolling stock and are not always readily available for older fleets.

Does the refit comply with the bogie's fit tolerances?
