Production & Tooling

Gicam technology can use DED laser cladding to rebuild large, expensive tools, such as injection molds, foundry molds, glass molds, stamping dies, cutting tools, and semiconductor equipment components. It targets only the worn area and creates conformal cooling channels to extend the life of the tools and improve their performance.

Rotary Cutting Tools

A standard tool body, a high-performance cutting edge: re-sharpen only the cutting edge, without machining the entire workpiece or compromising the balance.
These tools—whether punches, dies, or high-speed helical rollers—experience highly localized edge wear on the cutting edge, which is under continuous stress, while the body of the tool remains intact. DED allows only the cutting edge to be re-coated with a very high-hardness material (carbides, high-speed steels), limiting thermal distortions compared to a full-piece treatment and preserving—for rotating tools—the dynamic balance and rotational precision required for high speeds.

This hybrid approach combines a standard, less expensive tool body with a high-performance cutting edge, optimizing the trade-off between cost, service life, and production rate. It also allows for repeated regrinding and re-coating of the tool throughout its service life rather than replacement—a significant cost consideration for mass-produced or extra-long tools, which are expensive to completely remanufacture.
Single-insert cutting edge → Limited thermal distortion; standard tool body retained.
Repeated Regrinding → The tool is resharpened several times instead of being replaced.

FAQ

Does regrinding the cutting edge affect the balance of a rotating tool?

No: The bearing is designed to maintain the dynamic balance and rotational precision required at high speeds.

Why refill a cutting cylinder instead of replacing it?
