Large castings that are expensive to remanufacture and sometimes obsolete: refilling only the eroded or worn areas extends the life of the equipment.
The bearing surfaces and sealing surfaces of these housings wear out over time, often long before the rest of the part. On pump bodies and volutes, erosion and corrosion are concentrated in areas of high flow velocity or turbulence (volute inlet, sealing surfaces), while the bulk of the cast iron or steel body remains intact.
DED enables localized reconstruction of these critical areas without replacing the entire housing, which significantly reduces costs for large parts that are expensive to remanufacture and sometimes no longer available from foundries.
This hybrid approach also allows for the addition of protrusions or functional features to a standard machined or cast base, and enables the combination of materials—such as wear-resistant alloy on the sealing surfaces and a base material elsewhere—which optimizes both cost and performance. It extends the service life of equipment where the pump housing represents a significant investment compared to replaceable internal parts, and restores static sealing without requiring a complete remanufacture of the part.
