Power Transmission

Gicam technology can use DED laser resurfacing to restore precision rotating components in power transmission systems, such as gear shafts and housings, cylinder rods, and pump impellers and shafts. It targets only the worn areas—bearing surfaces, splines, and bores—while maintaining concentricity and balance tolerances.

Gearbox housings: bores and parting surfaces

A worn bore in a large, custom-cast housing: Rebuilding the area restores the bearing fit without having to remanufacture the housing.
Bearing housing bores become oval or wear out over time due to cyclic loads and repeated bearing installations, while the rest of the cast-iron housing remains dimensionally stable. DED allows these bores to be locally rebuilt to restore their original diameter and fit with the bearings—a repair that is far less expensive than replacing a large housing, which is often custom-cast and has a long lead time.

This approach is particularly beneficial for large or older-model gearboxes, where a replacement housing is not always available from standard stock. The process also allows for the repair of parting surfaces damaged by corrosion or impact, restoring static sealing without requiring a complete remanufacture of the part.
Restored bearing fit → Bore diameter locally re-machined, without remaking the housing.
Treated joint surfaces → Static seal restored after corrosion or impact damage.

FAQ

Is it possible to repair an ovalized crankcase bore without replacing the crankcase?

Yes, the DED locally builds up the bore to restore its original diameter and fit with the bearing before finish machining.

Is this repair worthwhile for an older gearbox?
